Better Storage Options

Kitchens are the one room in a house that have an incredible amount of things to store and also generally get the most use out of all the rooms.

Whilst not everyone wants to spend alot of money getting a new kitchen or upgrading it, it is worth looking at adding in better storage options to make your new kitchen more user friendly. Obviously adding these options in will make the kitchen more expensive, but you will appreciate them alot more than having to reach into the back of a cupboard with doors.

Adding more drawers into a kitchen allows for better use of space and ease of accessing everything in the cupboard. There are other ways to make cupboards better to use. Especially cupboards like pantries, corner units and the seldom used blind corner.

By clicking the thumbnails below you can find more information on ways to make these types of cupboards work better for you.

Orgaline Storage System

Blum have a system called Orgaline that allows for better storage of items in your kitchen. The Orgaline system can be used for storing food, cutlery, crockery, pots, liquids and pretty much anything else you keep in your kitchen.

It works in conjunction with the Blum Tandembox Drawer system, can be rearranged to suit your requirements and can also be washed in the dishwasher, thus making it a very versatile option to include in your kitchen plans.

Below I have included pictures of the different ways to utilize Orgaline, click the thumbnails to find out more about each of the options.

Cutlery Trays

When choosing cutlery trays, it generally comes down to price. Whilst most cabinet makers, myself included, will include a general plastic cutlery tray, there is also the option of Orgaline cutlery trays.

Orgaline trays, are component trays. Each section is removable and dishwasher safe, giving you the ability to easily clean and rearrange the components to suit how you would like them positioned.

Whilst a plastic cutlery tray is somewhere around the $20 mark, Orgaline can cost as little as $100 and more than $250 depending on what you want to achieve and the size of the drawer it needs to fit into.

You can compare the two different options below.

Softclose doors

Having your doors close gently is something everyone should use on their kitchen and other cabinets. It alleviates the “bang” noise heard when doors close, even when they have door bump ons on them.

Blumotion for doors is the perfect tool for achieving this. Its a very simple design that just clips directly onto their hinges. When you close the door, at around about 15 degrees from being close, the Blumotion starts to work by gently slowing the door down until it reaches the cabinet edge.

It is a cheap way to achieve a gentle closing door and simple enough to do at any time, as long as you have Blum hinges. It’s also a product I recommend to all my customers and have as an option on quotes just incase they are indecisive on whether they would like it or not.

No Handle Look

In our ever changing environment, kitchens have moved beyond the need of having handles to open the doors and drawers.

Blum have released some great products for achieving this look.

Firstly there is “tip-on”, which is used for having touch release doors. This is easily installed by drilling a 10mm hole into the gable, rail or bottom of a cabinet and then attaching the metal plate to the back of the door to allow the magnet to hold it closed.

Tip-on only requires a soft touch to open the door and can be used on melamine, wood, metal and glass doors. As long as unsprung hinges are used on the doors, the door will open to a comfortable point to be able to open it the rest of the way.

Ideally I use Tip-on on servery doors as a foot release door, it has become the perfect accessory for dealing with this situation as opposed to the old style touch catches.

Tip-on is also cheap enough to do, and works out to around the same cost as doing medium priced handles.

Read the tip-on brochure from Blum for more information.

Secondly there is Servo-drive for drawers from Blum.

Whilst there has been other products from other suppliers, having touch release drawers was always going to be a product that needed alot of design work put into it.

In this kitchen I used another product that was available at the time by Grass, they didn’t have the ability to softclose, and also took alot of work to get adjusted right. They also required a large gap between the carcase and the drawer front to work effectively.

Servo-Drive works by an electrical drive that pushes the drawer out from the back after having a gentle touch pushed on the front, allowing a no handle look to work well. Servo-Drive also works alongside blumotion on the tandembox drawers, giving the ability to have self opening and also soft closing drawers.

Whilst I have yet to install this system, I am looking forward to having the opportunity to do it. Due to the additional costs of having this ability though, it’s not for everyone.

Mother Nature

Today I found out that a doctors surgery I fit out in February got washed out during our bad weather this week. They had 600mm of water flood through the lower levels of the surgery, destroying the reception counter and the surgery cabinets.

I never even had a chance to pop in and get some final photos of the reception counter after everything had been finished, which is a real shame cause now it will probably end up being changed from the original design.

Hopefully the insurance company will allow me to redo the work, since I was the one to put the original cabinetry into it.

The Ugly Truth About Smoking

Cigarette or tobacco smoking is one of the popular, addictive habits among teenagers and young adults. Since cigarettes contain a high level of nicotine in order to get users addicted, it is no surprise then that millions of people from around the world really find it hard to break the habit. Although the effects of smoking are widely known to smokers and non-smokers alike, people still get hooked from smoking, and because of this, quitting seems to be one of the hardest parts of the habit.

While smoking is known to be a norm which exhibits social acceptance, particularly in teenagers among their peers, the habit does not really give any good benefit to smokers and non-smokers. Aside from getting addicted, you can acquire serious respiratory and heart diseases as well as develop bad breath and yellow teeth from smoking. The smoke that you emit can also affect the health of individuals who are non-smokers, most especially young children.

The Ugly Effects of Smoking

In medical views, cigarette or tobacco smoking is known as one of the essential sources of premature mortality among smokers. Every year, serious diseases and illnesses caused by cigarette smoking claim more than 400,000 lives in the United States alone. Fatalities also include children and adults who are merely exposed to second-hand smoke emitted by smokers.

When you smoke, you are actually inhaling more than 4,800 harmful chemical components, 69 of which are noted to trigger cancer diseases. The dreadful smoking habit is responsible for over 90 percent of lung cancer fatalities in the US and a range of 80 to 90 percent covering other respiratory-related deaths. If you happen to quit the habit, the chance of acquiring or developing chronic lung diseases is still high.

Moreover, smoking does not only affect your respiratory system. According to medical records and studies, you can also experience stroke and other coronary heart illnesses because of smoking too many cigarettes over the years. Note that each year, more people, smokers and non-smokers alike, acquire chronic heart diseases due to cigarette smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke.

In addition, even small children are likewise affected by the grim effects brought by second-hand smoke. Kids who are exposed to the mainstream smoke that is emitted by cigar and tobacco users can also acquire asthma and other allergy conditions like coughing, sneezing, and runny nose. Children can also experience serious cold condition and ear infection when they are regularly exposed to first-hand smokers’ emitted smoke.

Smoking is also related to other bodily malignancies and disorders such as slow healing of wounds and infertility cases among women. Other ailments like peptic ulcer and pneumonia are also among the recently reported diseases caused by cigarette and tobacco smoking and exposure.

If you are a chain-smoker, a pregnant woman who smokes, or if you are always surrounded with individuals who are smokers, your baby will likely develop a weak heart and lungs with curtailed lung function and narrow air passages. Smoking can also lead to infants’ deaths and premature delivery.

Other Dreary Effects of Smoking

Aside from developing serious lung and heart diseases as well as acquiring short-term effects from the habit, you can also experience other grave consequences when you get addicted to smoking. These health-related consequences include dental and hygiene problems.

Smoking may sound and appear cool, but this habit is really unhygienic. As you continue smoking, your teeth will eventually get yellowish or brownish stains since sticky tar deposits stay on your teeth. Also with smoking, you can develop plaque that rigidly forms on your teeth. When this happens, you will need to have the plaque remove by means of dental cleaning.

Aside from developing stains on your teeth, you are also bound to experience gum problems as a result to smoking. Dental reports show that excessive smoking can cause mouth inflammation or swelling. Cigars and tobaccos can also restrain the flow of blood in your gum tissues, thus limiting the absorption of essential nutrients to the bones as well as in the periodontal support of your teeth.

Meanwhile, smoking can also increase the risk of loosing your teeth. Medical studies related to smoking state that the average rate for tooth damage among smokers now range to 1.5 to 2.9 percent every 10 years. This means that if you begin smoking at age 18, you are likely to lose five teeth when you turn 35.

In addition, smoking can also delay the healing process of any dental procedure or surgery, and it can eventually lead to a serious mouth condition called dry socket. Apart from lung and heart diseases, you can also acquire oral cancer of the esophagus, larynx, and pharynx from too much cigarette and tobacco consumption. Also, you will most certainly have less successful dental treatments and implants if you are a heavy smoker or if you are regularly exposed to second hand smoke emissions.

And as if those were not enough, cigar and tobacco smoking can also ruin your physical appearance. Aside from making your skin look dull, smoke from your cigars can also make your hair stink and appear lank or dull. Compared to smokers, non-smokers’ hair are healthier and shinier. Besides acquiring dry and smelly hair, your hair can also lose its strength and hold. Smoking can cause hair breakage as nutrients and oxygen no longer flow normally inside your body. When your hair starts to break off, this means that your hair doesn’t receive the essential nutrients it requires to stay strong and healthy.

Furthermore, do not wonder if you are one heavy smoker and people are starting to distance from you; you may have acquired, more or less, a dry and stinky smell on your body and even on your clothes. You see, the smoke lingers on your clothes until you wash them. As such, regularly washing and dry-cleaning your clothes will eventually weaken the fibres, thus causing your clothes to wear out quickly. Smoking can also give a distinct, stinky smell on your body as the cigarettes’ components blend into your perspiration and release through your pores.

Now is the time to make the decision to quit! Cig-Arette™ is a breakthrough program to help you quit smoking more easily. Quitting cold turkey is nearly impossible, but the nutritional support supplements in Cig-Arette™ minimize withdrawal symptoms so you can get back your life!

House fitout in Paddington complete

I have today just finished the house fitout in Paddington that I started back in August.

This has been a real pleasure to work on this project. Seeing it all come together was a joy. All the tradesmen on site had different opinions as to how it was going to look once completed, but in the end everyone really liked the final finish.

Props have to go to Graham Davis, the Architect for designing this project. David is a pleasure to work with and open to suggestions. Always great to work with an Architect that appreciates the trades input. And the team at Bev Jenner Constructions are always great to work with.

You can check out the photos and info on each of the sections below.

Leveling up cupboards

Tools required: LevelChisel, Block of wood and various packers from 1mm thick to 10mm thick

First grab your level and lay it across the back edge, take note of which end the bubble floats to. If it is in the middle, between the two lines then the back edge is level, if it has floated to one side, then that is the high point.

From the high point, set your level from that corner to the front corner, take note of which end the bubble floats to again. If the bubble is at the same end as your last high point, then this is where you need to start levelling the cupboard from. If the bubble floats to the opposite end to the previous high point, then you need to repeat the process from this new one.

Once you have determined exactly which corner is the highest point, you then need to work backwards. Place your level along the edge of the highest point. Grab some packers and place a couple under the opposite end until the bubble is in the centre. Once you have worked out how many packers this requires, take those packers and place them under that bottom corner of the cupboard.

Tip: If the cupboard is too heavy to lift or too awkward to lift the corner on, take your chisel and block of wood, place the block about 40mm away from the bottom edge of the cupboard. Next grab your chisel and place it on top of the block of wood with the front edge of the chisel wedged under the edge of the cupboard. Then push down using the chisel as a lever action, once the cupboard lifts, pop the packers under the edge.

Once you have that edge of the cupboard levelled, do the same to the next side, repeat the process until all 4 sides are level.

If the cupboard is rather tall, you can use level the cupboard by placing the level on its edge running vertically. This is called levelling for plum. The principles are the same as when levelling the way mentioned above.

Tip: How to determine if your level is still actually level. Start by placing your level on the edge of a cupboard. Pack the level up until the bubble is in the centre. Once you have done this, pick the level up and turn it around 180 degrees. If the bubble is still in the centre, then your level is fine, if it is no longer in the centre, it’s time to get a new one or change the bubbles if your level has this option.

To ensure your level is still plum, rest it against a wall and position so that the plum bubble is in the centre, draw a line down the side of the level. Next flip the level over and line it up with the line. Once again, if the bubble is in the centre, your level is fine, otherwise it’s time to replace the level.

That’s it for this one.
